A medium is the liquid component of a paint in which its pigment
is suspended or a liquid with which paint may be diluted without
interfering with the critical values such as binding or film forming
properties.
Mediums have been used for a variety of purposes by artists for
hundreds of years in oil painting and for over 60 in acrylic painter.
Mediums are used as a binder or vehicle for dry pigments, as an
enhancement to color, to make an oil or acrylic color more workable
on the canvas, to increase or decrease the drying time, to provide
protection to partially dried or fully dried paintings, and many
other reasons which are all dependent on the preference and style
of the individual artist. The technology of art materials has
continued to evolve through the centuries and has created both
natural and synthetic mediums.
